* We'll go to the first single released from this artist's first solo album in 1996.  While the track did not chart exceptionally well, it caught the attention of someone responsible for the soundtrack of the movie, Twister, starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton.  Name the artist and the song if you can...

*This terrific song was released as a B-side to a single, not once, but twice in a span of 2 years.  The 1st time was with the song, After Midnight, the 2nd time with Let It Rain.  It has been described as 'a very underrated love song'.  Now you should be able to guess the artist, but name the track...

*These related artists formed a band when they first started in 1974.  The band's name?  The Army which later transformed to the name White Heart.  One of the artists had a stutter all pretty much through her formative years, but oddly enough, it disappeared when she started singing.  Name the artists and their final band name...

*This well-known performer cut his first solo album in 1970 and one of the songs we'll play was released as a single that was actually inspired by a new relationship with Rita Coolidge.  He had help on this song from 5 other well-known artists, including John Sebastion and Cass Elliott to name just two of them.  Name the artist and real extra credit if you can guess the song...

* Said this artist of one of his most famous tracks..."It was interesting as I was becoming a Christian at that time and we never thought a thing about it.  We never thought that doing something semi-religious was any big deal.  We didn't think of it as being politically incorrect or anything like that...we just did what felt right"  The year was 1968...Any guesses as to the artist and the quite popular song?

*A two-part track with two distinct sections bridging them will play today.  The second part was originally written for Buffalo Springfield and appeared on their 1968 album.  With both parts merged, this song became the opening track of a most significant album in 1970.  Lots to guess here...The band, the album and extra credit if you know who wrote the 2nd merged part for Buffalo Springfield...

*We are going to play the most negative song ever recorded as the word 'no' appears 100 times and 'nobody' gets sung 46 times.  Name the bar band from Youngstown, Ohio that sang it and the song.

*Yacht rockers will delight as we play a track with a mellow 70's vibe that has specific references to sailing.  Yacht rock became a quite popular genre in America in the decade of the 2000's and it helped revive the music of this band.  Name the band and the track

* A track we play early on has been called 'Soul Perfection' and rightly so.  It was written by the artist who actually wrote it with the intention of giving the song to singer Kim Carnes (rolling with the success of Bette Davis Eyes), but it did not work out and the writer ended up recording it himself.  Name the artist and the song if you can.

*The songwriting team of Glenn Frey and Don Henley actually started writing this song in 2001, but it was not completed and ultimately recorded until 2007.  They both admitted that they were never quite sure they would ever finish the song, but a late revelation provided a burst of inspiration and they got it done.  Name the song

*This track makes a statement involving satire and humor, poking fun at the incredibly silly lifestyle that someone in the artist's position is faced with...that being despite having a really nice house, he's on the road so much...it is really hard to even feel he lives there.  The road life for any musician is not always wine and roses according to this track...Name the artist and the song

*47 years ago, this song appeared on this group's 5th studio album.  It's been described as 'the infectious title track' of the album, as its lyrics are 'skillfully depicting the love for a woman or a commitment to God, depending on how one interprets them.'  The latter aspect is no surprise, given that the duo was famously affiliated with the Baha'i faith.  Name the band and the song

1. Smokey Robinson, Being With You  2. Long Road Out of Eden

* Phil Collins recorded a demo of this track for 2 purposes...one to share with Stephen Bishop (remember the song On And On) so that Bishop would have an idea for recording it himself...and two...for the soundtrack of the movie Buster.  He eventually found out that the film used the demo recording and decided to record it himself as he accepted a starring role in the movie.  Name the song.

*This band was not the first group to use a horn section, but they were the first to fuse it with rock, jazz and some blues thrown in for good measure.  They practiced in a loft on Bleeker Street in New York's Greenwich Village, as crowds gathered and cheered them on any time they did practice.  They knew they were on the right track.  Name the band

*The title of this track is kind of pure nonsense with a few possible theories on what it meant.  Was it an expression used as a way of congratulating each other or perhaps it was simply the name of the artist's pet cat. Name the artist and the song.

*This song was written long before climate change became a hot topic, but even in 1970, some ecologically minded songwriters were concerned about Mother Earth.  The track is a reflection on mortality, and also a lament for the fate of the Earth.  Name the song and band that performs it.

 Battle Of The Bands!
You Can Call Me Al by Paul Simon vs  Carolina In My Mind by James Taylor

Answers:
  1. A Groovy Kind of Love  2. Blood, Sweat and Tears

* His voice has been described as an 'elegant, seductive croon.'  Consider that he and his contemporary, David Bowie, influenced a generation with both their music and their appearances.  He has also been described as 'an art object' that should hang in the Tate (Tate being a British museum).  He formed a great band in 1970 and had a 13 year run with the group.  Only the pandemic has slowed down his touring at age 74.  Name the artist, and his former band...

*Lead vocalist of this band from the 60's came across a song by Carl Perkins and wrote a new song with the same title.  The band was formed in Tottenham, England back in 1957, but kicked into high gear in the 60's.  They were a staple of British clubs...and with this track, created a 'thumping' drum sound, that later became known as...
'The Tottenham Sound'...Name that band and extra credit for the name of the track, their most famous...

*This artist hasn't had a top 40 hit in more than 25 years, but all 6 of his albums from 1988-1998 have been certified as Gold albums.  A wry-humored songwriter with a quiet, cowboy charm has a distinctive appeal to his fans...something that is totally mutual.  He has been known to pull out a camera at performances simply to capture fun photos of cheering audiences.  Name the artist...

*The concept of 'smiling' is explored in both title and lyrics of the track to be shared later today.  The track reached #10 on the Billboard Chart in 1974 and continues to resonate throughout the decades since then.  A true, fun classic...it'll probably sound as fresh and contagious 50 years from now as it did back then.  Name the band and the song that hopefully will promote as big a smile as advertised when you hear it...

* This song, a duet, was released in 1987.  First choices to team up with the singer were either Barbara Streisand or Whitney Houston, but both decided against participating.  No worries, as another vocalist was recruited, who did not know she would be singing the song until the day of the recording session.  She also co-wrote another track with Quincy Jones on the same album.  Name the artist and the song...

*This artist started covering songs that inspired and impacted him while growing up in the Dallas, Texas area, absorbing blues, soul, New Orleans music and some early rock and roll.  The inspiring artists?  Ray Charles, Van Morrison, Lennon & McCartney to name a few.  Not a fan of his own singing voice early on...well...let's just say he did not have such a problem the more he recorded.  Name the artist...

*By the time he started recording the album we'll play from later today, this artist had already achieved commercial success as a solo artist and producer.  He also became dissatisfied with other musicians that played with him which led to the decision of recording the entire album by himself using multi-tracking.  That made him a pioneer back in 1972.  Did it make any difference?  Not really...

*A song we'll play is all about what it's like to be famous.  This artist recruited John Lennon, who helped write this song, coming up with the title and also singing background parts in a 'high' voice.  They had met each other less than a year prior to the recording, at a party thrown by Elizabeth Taylor.  Lennon was one of the artist's idols and they became good friends...Name the artist and extra credit for the song title...

* Doors guitarist, Robby Krieger wrote this track about the numerous times his girlfriend, and later wife, threatened to leave him.  Lots of slamming doors in their relationship.  The title of the track came from a phrase the legendary Duke Ellington popularized during his concerts.  And while The Doors didn't have a bass player, they enlisted Jerry Scheff from Elvis Presley for this one.  Name the tune

*This artist was very much a critic of his own singing voice, but he actually had a great voice that he eventually got comfortable flexing, as he covered different genres.  Some of his ballads and blues tracks always sounded convincing when performing them.  Name the artist.

*A great rock band was formed by a singer/songwriter, lead vocalist, guitarist and a keyboardist, vocalist, way back in 1969 in Los Angeles.  The band survived 10 years before being broken up by one of the founders due to creative differences.  As it turns out, he broke up the band shortly before his death.  Surviving members re-formed in 1987.  Name the two founders and the band.

*This artist was dating a movie star in the 70's and they went out with some friends to a posh L.A. restaurant.  In the middle of the meal, the artist leaned over to his date and whispered...'I wrote a song for you.'  No one really took notice as he sang the song softly to her as she started to cry.  That is her story...but the artist has a far less romantic version, claiming the track is about a lot more than just women...including a love of soccer and Scotland and perhaps even his parents.  Name the artist, the track and extra credit for his date's name...

* This great band actually modified the group's name a bit for their album (their 13th) that we'll dip into today.  They felt compelled to do a slight modification in response to all of the tribute and imitation bands who repeatedly used the band promoting their own tours.  Name the band.

*This exceptional artist has had a full life and most rewarding music career.  A most interesting personal life that involves 3 marriages and 4 children...living split between South Africa and London currently.  Has been plagued by severe pain from a 10 year old spinal surgery that has grown worse each year.  Name the 65 year old artist.

*A member of Earth, Wind and Fire decided to put together a solo album in 1984.  He sought a well-known vocal contributor at the time to team up with him and together they released the album containing the song we'll enjoy this evening...one that became a huge hit.  The track is about a captivating woman who cannot be tamed (their words, not mine).  The vocal contributor also produced the album.  Name the artist who made the album, the artist he enlisted to join in and also produce the album...extra credit for the name of the track...

*This rock legend and band have been together 40+ years...that's ZZ Top-ish in terms of longevity.  Has been nominated for 7 Grammy Awards, but garnered only 1.  He's written music for other bands including the Eagles.
Two words are recurring regularly in his incredible repertoire of songs.  One is 'night'.  The other???  Name the artist and extra credit if you can guess the other word..

* This artist is a tall, glam, accomplished piano player, born in Texas and made a career in dance halls and roadhouses of the Gulf South.  She coined a phrase about her music that kind of eloquently sums her boogie-woogie, two-step music vibe...."If you can't make 'em dance...money will become a space problem!"  Name the artist...

*The two artists forming this duo recorded 7 albums together from 1972 to 1977.  One of them was born in the state of Washington, the other in California.  One was part of Buffalo Springfield, the other, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.  Name the artists...extra credit for which one was born in each state and which band they were in...

*This great rock band also came together after members enjoyed stints with other name bands.  A couple of members came from the band, Free.  Another came from King Crimson.  Another from Mott The Hoople.
Name the band. and extra credit if you know the band members and their previous groups.

*This artist road-tested her songs in her father's taxi cab.  She wanted to recapture the atmosphere in which most people would listen to her music.  She would cut CD's and play it in the cab because she wanted to know how most people would hear her music, which would not always be through professional studio systems.
Name the artist...

* There is a Mexican border town surrounding El Paso, TX that is the subject of this 1989 track from The Doobie Brothers.  Perhaps it was a cool place to visit back then...but allow me to share my personal story from my one and only visit there in 2012.  Name the song if you can.

*I'll play a track that was written  by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen for Steely Dan in 1973.  A cover of the track was made and released 40 years later by this great artist who has collaborated with Fagen on numerous occasions.  Name the artist and extra credit for the track name.

*The Everly Brothers were the 'cat's pajamas' back in the 60's.  Songs like All I Have To Do Is Dream, Cathy's Clown, Bye Bye Love and Wake Up Little Suzie made staked them to incredible fame.  But they did a track in 1965 that you may not know, unless you were a fan of country rock band, Poco, who covered it in 1982.  We'll play the Poco version.  This is a tough one, and kudos to you if you can name the track...

*In the mid-50's, when this exceptional artist was only 7 years old, his Father was called away for military service, which had been deferred earlier for Medical School.  At the conclusion of his Father's service, Dad volunteered for a mission setting up bases in Antarctica. Dad just found it extremely difficult to transition back to domestic life and in 1972, divorce came to the family of the artist.  The artist's Father, became the subject (2 years after the divorce) of the track we'll play today.  Name the artist and extra credit for the name of the song...
