*Apart from the track attached to my opening...our first song tonight is from 1966. It saw the formation of a most excellent band and their eponymous debut album...one that had a bit of band member concern. They were not really pleased that the album, the production did not capture their on-stage energy and excitement. 12 songs on the album were written, 6 each, by two of the members. Name the band...
*This great 60's group started in 1965 and broke up initially in 1968. One of the key individuals embarked on a solo career and while quite talented, never produced a charting album or single during that short term. The label was bent on marketing the solo effort like they did the group from which she came. They did not do the artist any favors in that regard. Name the band and the artist that went solo.... *If ever there was a short list of working-class rock 'n' roll artists...this gent could possibly claim the title of father of the group. Some cling to a theory that the artist never really got just dues or exposure, but the 6 albums released from 1976-1991 sailed well past platinum status. A Greatest Hits compilation album even earned some 'rare air' distinction...Diamond certification which is 10x Platinum. Name the artist... *Probably difficult to believe, but the remnants of this most excellent 60's formed band wanted to create a new album in the late 90's. The difficulty came that incredibly, no label would take them on, citing drastic artistic slumps. Well, the artists had the means to record in studio out of their own pockets. The result? A 1999 album some critics claimed didn't rival their earlier works...but don't let that fool anyone. The quartet lived on! Name the band... Feeling like a bonus 'deep' trivia question might be in order. I'll truly applaud any who know this one!... This female artist originally from Southern Ohio didn't sign a record deal until the age of 37. Her first album released in 1999...the result of finally moving to Nashville and tapping into a bit of the country vibe there, put her on a path for a noteworthy career. She's got a bit of country, rock and pop that define her music. Name the artist... BATTLE OF THE BANDS Into The Mystic by Van Morrison vs It’s Money That Matters by Randy Newman ANSWERS 1. *The frontman for this London band formed in 1970 was no stranger to going solo as well. His 1975 solo effort came at a time when both the US and UK were flirting with disco music. The track we'll play is about hitting the streets in search of some casual, no-strings frolicking. The singer envisioned it as a young guy zooming off in a car, looking for action at a club. Name the Frontman, his band and extra credit for the name of the track...
*Without a doubt, this member of a most famous British band, primarily in the 60's, released his best solo effort in 1970. The album was notable for many reasons, but what the artist did crafting material that managed the rare feat of conveying spiritual mysticism without sacrificing his gifts for melody and grand sweeping arrangements. Name the artist, his former band and extra credit for the name of the album... *Robert Quine was born in Akron, Ohio, 8 years prior to The LooneyMan in the same city. That may be trivia enough, but Quine went on to become an exceptional guitarist...one that was recruited in the early 80's to join another great American artist's band. He played with said artist on a 'Live' album released in 1984...one that included a lengthy rendition of one of the artist's most famous songs. Name the artist and extra credit for the song name... *This artists' 9th studio album was a 1995 musical which based the work on the classic story of Faust, but updating the story to the modern day and infusing it with humorous cynicism. This song on that album was sung by Bonnie Raitt. It was quite surprising then that in 2008, he closed his new album with the song sung by him. While the song lyrically did not interest him, he has been told by many strangers that this song means more to them than anything else he's ever written. Name the artist and extra credit for the track name... BATTLE OF THE BANDS My Best Friends Girl by The Cars vs Show Me by The Pretenders. ANSWERS 1. Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music, Love Is The Drug 2.
